During the 2024 NBA Draft, the Minnesota Timberwolves pulled off one of the biggest fleeces in a trade with the San Antonio Spurs.

With the No. 8 pick, the Spurs selected guard Rob Dillingham from Kentucky and promptly traded him for an unprotected first-round pick in 2031 and the option to swap picks in 2030.

The Spurs used their No. 4 pick in the draft to select Stephon Castle, a guard from the Connecticut Huskies. The Dillingham pick raised some eyebrows as the team had already chosen a guard in the top ten, leading some to question the decision.

But when the trade details were announced, NBA fans absolutely roasted the Spurs for their deal with the Timberwolves. Many think San Antonio could have received a better deal for Dillingham.

    "this was so dumb"

    "Spurs got fleeced"

"Spurs got absolutely COOKED on this trade"

"This Spurs trade is the actual most insane thing of all time?"

"When I read [Timberwolves] I knew they didn’t have any good assets … seriously Spurs couldn’t find a better trade partner for the 8th pick?"

"Don't like that trade for Spurs, Rob Dillingham would've been a nice addition to their roster, an unprotected first round pick is a nice grab, but it's for 2031 lol. A protected 2030 pick swap too, but I don't understand why you wouldn't want to add a good piece to start building with Wemby, Castle, Sochan, Champagnie, Branham, Jones, and the whole young core."

It is likely the Spurs are acquiring future draft assets to set up another big trade for a current NBA star. Speculation has it that they are targeting Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young. Pairing Young and Victor Wembanyama would be huge for San Antonio. But for now, this Dillingham trade seems silly.
