A motorist was left with broken bones and a severe head injury in a Minneapolis hit-and-run on July 14, and had his belongings stolen just moments later. His family has now set up a GoFundMe to help with his legal and medical costs.

Carl Vargas, 26 was driving his motorcycle along 7th Street in downtown when a car reportedly blew through a traffic light at 2nd Avenue, striking him. The driver and passenger of the car fled the scene.

Vargas was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he is now recovering and is reportedly in a "satisfactory condition."

"Carl survived with several injuries, including massive head trauma, broken bones in his right ankle and foot, an amputated toe and road rash," the GoFundMe reads.

The fundraiser mentions that while he was unconscious on the ground after the crash, a bystander walked up to him, pretending to be a concerned citizen, and stole his backpack which contained his phone and wallet.

This was not included in the original police report, and due to the active nature of the investigation, Minneapolis Police Department says it cannot comment at this time.

The fundraiser has raised $7,425 out of their $50,000 goal.

MPD is still investigating the crash and no arrests or citations have been made.
