A Wisconsin father and daughter met a sad, tragic end in Utah’s Canyonlands National Park Friday, succumbing to triple-digit temperatures after they got lost and ran out of water.

The 52-year-old man and his 23-year-old daughter were hiking on the Syncline Trail, according to the National Park Service.

Moab was under a heat advisory, and the temperature reached 100 degrees that day.

NPS Rangers received a distress call, but the pair were already dead by the time they were finally located.

It’s just the latest heat-related deaths to impact hikers and tourists across the west this summer. Several hikers have died in the Grand Canyon, while a motorcycle rider passed away in Death Valley when the temperature in the desert reached 128.

NPS guidelines suggest avoiding hiking during the hottest part of the afternoon heat and to always insure ample water is brought on hikes.
