Halifax, Madison Heights, Amherst win DYB state championships in Appomattox
Halifax, Madison Heights and Amherst left town last week as winners of the 2024 Virginia State DYB Tournament held July 5-10 at at the Appomattox County Community Park. Halifax won the Ozone Division 1 (ages 11-12) trophy with an 11-0 victory over Appomattox. Madison Heights captured the AAA Minors Division I (ages 9-10) trophy with an 11-5 win over Goochland. Amherst won Ozone Division II (ages 11-12) with an 11-1 win over Clarksville.
Poplar Forest hosts archaeological field school
Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest welcomed 14 students to its annual Summer Field School in Historical Archaeology. Hosted in partnership with the University of Virginia, the field school teaches practical skills in excavation, site survey, recording and laboratory methods, as well as foundational theories and methods in archaeology. Over the past five weeks, Poplar Forest’s professional archaeology staff has guided field school students through the fundamentals of archaeological research as they’ve explored the history of this National Historic Landmark.
