After a nice start, the Monticello softball team is looking for a turnaround. After a week and a half off, the Magic played four games in four days last week. After dropping games to North Branch and St. Francis, Monticello ended a three-game losing streak by taking down Zimmerman.

A quick turnaround saw the Magic play the Saints for the second time last week but they couldn’t keep the bats going as they lost by a run.

Offense is the name of the game. In five wins, Monticello is averaging 7.6 runs per game. In eight losses the Magic are averaging just 3.25 runs per game.

On Tuesday, April 30, Monticello lost 4-3 to the Vikings. Josi Ordorff (L) allowed four runs off of 12 hits and two walks in seven innings. She struck out six. Ordorff and Emma McLeod combined for four of Monticello’s five hits. McLeod was responsible for two RBI thanks to a home run.

Monticello began the month of May with a 12-6 loss to St. Francis. Monticello led 4-0 after one inning but the Saints plated four in the fourth and seven more in the fifth. Ordorff allowed 11 runs off of 12 hits in four innings. Lily Kennedy allowed one unearned run in relief off of three hits. Both pitchers struck out one batter but didn’t walk anybody.

Ordorff was 4-for-4 at the plate with two runs and an RBI. Allison Beilke was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Leadoff hitter Taylor Marcus also had two RBI. Hannah Storey recorded two hits and scored twice.

Looking for retribution, the Magic found it during an 8-4 win over Zimmerman one day later. Storey went 3-for-4 and was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. She drove in three runs and scored two. Maddie Biegler had two hits and two RBI. Ella Priola had two hits and scored once.

Kennedy (W) went the distance in the pitcher’s circle. She allowed four runs (two earned) off of five hits and three walks while striking out three.

It was a much-needed win for a squad that has been struggling since they had a three-game winning streak come to an end on April 15 against Princeton.

On Friday, May 3, Monticello had a better effort but fell short of winning back-to-back games since they won three straight in early April. Ordorff allowed three runs off of six hits in seven innings with six Ks.

At the plate, the Magic hit a combined 6-for-26, two of which came off the bat of Beilke. McLeod hit her fourth homer of the season and Storey had a double. Sydney Fuller had a hit and scored a run.

Monticello (5-8, 3-5 Mississippi 8) played Princeton (9-3, 6-2) on Tuesday. On Thursday, Monticello hosts Becker (9-5, 5-4) a day before taking a short road trip to Big Lake (5-7, 1-6). On Monday, May 14, the Magic play another road game against Delano (7-1). The next day the red and black are back in front of the home faithful for a game against Chisago Lakes (11-1, 9-0).
