    The Rivalry Series: WVU football’s history against Marshall

    Across 131 seasons on the gridiron, the West Virginia University football team has developed several rivalries that have helped forge the identity of Mountaineer football. Over the next several weeks, we’ll break down some of the biggest series in West Virginia football history.

    We continue the series with a matchup that many fans in the Mountain State may not consider a rivalry at all. In 12 meetings on the football field, WVU has never lost to Marshall. However, a rivalry may come in many different forms. Sometimes rivalries are born from regional identity or competition. The case of the “Friends of Coal Bowl” is a rivalry built off a mandate.
