MORTON, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — The Peoria Rivermen went back to school on Monday.

Some of the players from the SPHL team helped students at Lincoln Elementary School learn the ins-and-outs of hockey. Students in PE classes at the school are starting a unit on floor hockey and the minor league hockey players helped kick it off.

“This is the first time I’ve done this in schools in Peoria,” said Rivermen captain Zach Wilkie. “But over my hockey career I’ve done it a couple times and it’s so much fun because you see the kids smile and laugh. They are having so much fun while we are doing it.”

The players helped students learn stick handling, shooting and how to play goalie.

“I learned how to handle the hockey stick,” second grader Ivy Taufer said. “It’s nice with these Rivermen (players). We got to play hockey with them.”
