Twin Brothers Build Foundations for Construction Careers at GNTC
Georgia Northwestern Technical College (GNTC) students Rance and Ryder Smith are building on their construction experience this summer by interning with local companies. The twins, Calhoun natives, said they have always been interested in construction and started classes in the Construction Management program at GNTC’s Gordon County Campus in Calhoun in fall 2023. Each expects to graduate with an associate degree in spring 2025.

Calhoun High School was the site last week of an Under Armour basketball tournament as one of the satellite gyms for the event, which was also held at Lakepoint Center in Cartersville. The event showcased teams and players from all the over the country with squads as far away as Seattle, Washington and Salt Lake City, Utah participating. The event ran through the weekend and games were held at all three gyms at the high school.

CPD highlights new squatted truck law
A new law went into effect July 1 that made it illegal to drive a squatted truck and the Cartersville Police Department is trying to get the word out. “Essentially, as it relates to a squatted truck, the new law says that it is illegal for a vehicle weighing at least 4,000 pounds and not more than 7,500 pounds to lower or raise the front end more than 4 inches than the height of the rear,” CPD Capt. Greg Sparacio said. “To those who like to play word games, and I’m not talking about Scrabble, this also means you can’t lower the rear of the vehicle more than 4 inches and claim it’s legal because you did not alter the front suspension."

Linda Gail Freeman, 76, of Rockmart, formerly of Douglasville passed on Sunday, July 14, 2024. She was born on July 2, 1948, in Atlanta to the late Joseph Fred and Florence Augusta Parks. Linda was a devoted member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Dallas where she loved attending services. In her spare time, she loved collecting baby dolls and any kind of jewelry.
ACC recommends small bar ordinance
The Rome Alcohol Control Commission has forwarded a recommendation to the full city commission to adopt a small bar ordinance. Currently, any establishment that sells liquor has to meet a 50-50 food-to-drink ratio, unless a variance is granted. There are only two establishments that have such a variance—Old Havana and Combat Market. The small bar ordinance would waive the food-to-drink ratio for certain establishments that meet certain guidelines.

Georgia Woman Arrested for Allegedly Stealing from Construction Company
A Rome, Georgia woman is accused of stealing around $110,000 – from a construction company over a period of 14 months. According to the arrest warrant 33-year old Rochelle Alexandria Vallejos converted and redirected the money meant for Brown Construction, into her own personal checking account. The transactions occurred between January 1st, 2023 and February 29th, 2024.
Woman Faces Multiple Charges Relating to Fire/Arson
A North Georgia woman was recently charged in connection with the fire that occurred back on March 31st on East Second Avenue in Lindale. According to arrest warrants – 41-year-old Linda Ann Barnes threatened to light the victim’s residence on fire and then used kerosene to do so.
