Man allegedly overdoses with child in car in parking lot of St. Marys Walmart
ST. MARYS — A man is facing charges after he was reportedly found unresponsive from a drug overdose in the Walmart Supercenter parking lot in St. Marys. State police in Ridgway have charged Joseph Michael Moro, 37, of Cheswick, with one count of endangering the welfare of children –parent/guardian/other commits offense, a felony in the third degree; one misdemeanor count of possession of a controlled substance; and one misdemeanor count of the use/possession of drug paraphernalia, according to a criminal complaint filed at Magisterial District Judge Mark Jacob’s office July 8.

Bench Dedication at Shawmut Park
The Kreckel Family recently dedicated a bench at Shawmut Park in Downtown St. Marys in memory of Lavern Kreckel Jr., “TEX,” who was a longtime business owner in local industry. The bench was then presented to the City of St. Marys. Pictured from the city are Mayor Lyle Garner and city Manager Joe Fleming, along with Mary Kreckel, Vern Kreckel III, Sarah Reedy, Matthew Reedy, and Lauren Reedy. Missing from the photo are Annie and Scott Reedy and Tina Gradizzi. The bench was made by DuBrook Inc. of St. Marys. The plaque on the bench was made by Ashley Denio Studios and installed by Kennedy Signs. A special blessing of the bench was done by Father Tom Curry OSB and Father Ignatius Camello OSB of St. Marys Church. This is the first bench installed in the park, and anyone interested in purchasing a bench for the park should contact Gradizzi at city hall for more information. The Kreckel family wishes to thank everyone who helped with this project.

ST. BONAVENTURE — Students in the Master’s Entry to Practice (MEP) nursing program at St. Bonaventure University had an experience this summer they won’t soon forget. Seven MEP students completed a 55-hour clinical immersion at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa., a Trauma I center and part of the Guthrie Healthcare System. Oilers Split Doubleheader With Horseheads Hitmen
HORSEHEADS, NY — The Olean Oilers split a doubleheader with the Horseheads Hitmen Tuesday. The Oilers won Game 1 in home run derby fashion, hitting five homers in an 11-4 win. Douglas W. Burke, 86, of Warren, PA, passed away Monday, July 8, 2024, at the John & Orpha Blair Hospice House. Doug was born March 25, 1938, in Warren, the son of the late William and Mary “Beryl” Perkins Burke. He was a 1956 graduate of Warren High School and attended the Milwaukee School of Engineering. He served in the U. S. Air Force from 1956-1960.

City of Olean to spend $205,000 more on South Union after state demands
OLEAN — Work on South Union Street will cost an extra $205,000 before a single shovel of dirt is overturned. In a 4-3 vote, the Common Council approved a change order with Millennium Construction to add street paving and roundabout lighting back into the $3.98 million South Union Street Gateway project, which is expected to break ground later this year.
St. Marys, Elk County Catholic agree to football co-op
ST. MARYS, Pa — St. Marys Area and Elk County Catholic are joining forces. The two schools have agreed to a co-op in football for the upcoming 2024 season, pending the approval of both District 9 and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA). The co-op was approved in a special meeting by the St. Marys Area School Board on June 26.
