A west suburban great-grandmother became a millionaire over the weekend.ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watchPamela Arscott of Franklin Park, Illinois won the top prize of $1 million on Illinois Lottery Celebration Instant Ticket.Arscott said she saw the scratch off ticket while shopping at a Walmart in Addison."I started scratching the ticket and saw I had a matching number for a million dollars," she said. "I thought it was a mistake. I immediately woke up my daughter."Her daughter rushed to the store to get it scanned to make sure it was real."She got to the store, scanned the ticket, called me, and said, 'It's real. You're getting a million dollars, Mom'," she said.The Walmart, on North Rohlwing Road, will receive a bonus of 1% of the prize.She has five children, ten grandkids and two great-grandchildren. Her husband of 49 years passed away in October."He was the breadwinner and took care of all of us. Great Harvest bakery on Central Street changes hands
After 23 years of baking and serving the community with smiles and after-school snacks, the Schaps family will finally have weekends off. It was just days before Sept. 11, 2001, when Dave and Liz Schaps purchased Great Harvest on Central Street, launching a labor of love that would span their kids’ childhoods. Their eldest daughter, Hannah, was in preschool when they took on the franchise, and this September she will start medical school in Grenada. Their second daughter, Julia, was born two weeks after Dave started baking bread and just graduated in June from the University of Denver.
Dedicated hobbyist transforms Trahan Park into stunning garden
Rick Mihevc gardens as a hobby. He lives next door to Trahan Park on Ridge Avenue and Monroe Street. He and his wife have lived in their home since 1999; they raised their family there. When they moved in, the park had some gardens that were “overlooked and overgrown,” said neighbor Neil Parker. Over the last 15 years and with a lot of hard work, Mihevc transformed Trahan Park.
