Garrett College students complete CCMA program
MCHENRY — Five students recently completed the classroom portion of the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) program at Garrett College. They are now working to complete their final externship hours before sitting for the CCMA national certification.
Kitzmiller Homecoming set for July 27
KITZMILLER — The 35th annual Kitzmiller Homecoming is scheduled for next Saturday at the Kitzmiller Community Center (former Kitzmiller School.) Planned activities will include the annual car show, a cornhole tournament, a volleyball tournament, horse drawn carriage rides, and plenty more activities for families. Live music also will be featured in the afternoon.
Joseph Raymond “Joe” Stevens
Stevens, Joseph Joseph Raymond "Joe" Stevens, 80, of Grantsville, MD, passed from this life on Monday, July 15, 2024, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, WV. Born June 26, 1944, in Cumberland, MD, he was the youngest of three children born to James Arthur and Lucille Margaret (Smith) Stevens. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother James. A. Stevens, Jr., and his sister Dona (Stevens) Hungerford Smith. Mr. Stevens was a 1962 graduate of Beall High School. He also attended Frostburg State College, playing on the College's first football team. His early employment included the P & K Service Center, Frostburg, MD, and the Celanese Corporation, Cresaptown, MD. He retired from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, New Germany State Park and Savage River State Forest, with thirty-three years of service as a Forest Ranger. He was also a past member of the 365th Supply Company, United States Army Reserves, Cresaptown. Joe was a longtime member and former trustee of the Classy Chassis Car Club. Mr. Stevens is survived by his wife of 57 years, Rebecca Jane (Bowser) Stevens, whom he married on August 20, 1966; his daughter Julie (Stevens) Yoder and husband Dennis, Bittinger, MD; and two grandsons, Derek Yoder and wife Vicki, Oakland, MD; and Andrew Yoder, Bittinger. He is also survived by a number of nephews and nieces: Steve, Tommy, Michael, and Joe Hungerford, Sherri Coppage, Ladona Gorham, and James A. Stevens, III. He is also survived by several lifelong friends and fellow retirees: Rick Lewis, Harold (Mac) MacDonald, and Bob Hershberger; coffee buddies, Fred Holliday and Jim Wilburn; dear friends Jerry and Lori Clise; and many cousins and close friends. A Celebration of Life honoring Joe will be held on Saturday, August 24th at 7:00 p.m. in the Lake House at New Germany State Park, Grantsville, MD. A private interment will be held on the family farm in Preston County, WV. The family has asked friends and family who wish to express their sympathy to plant a tree or send contributions to Northern Garrett Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 293, Grantsville, MD 21536 or to Bittinger Vol. Fire Department/EMS, 176 Brenneman Road, Bittinger, MD, 21522, in Joe's memory. Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 179 Miller Street, Grantsville, is assisting Joe's family with his arrangements.

Dr. Berhane received her medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, MI. She spent two years in an internal medicine residency program at Wayne, in the Detroit Medical Center. She obtained her undergraduate degree at Andrews University/Adventist University of East Africa, Kenya (affiliate university) in Berrien Springs, Mich.

Marlene M. (Mountain) Foor, 76, of Everett, formerly of Potter Creek, passed away on July 12, 2024 at Pennknoll Village. She was born on September 29, 1947 in Roaring Spring; daughter of the late Ernest and Alice Mountain. Marlene was a 1965 graduate of Northern Bedford High School and Lutheran in faith.

Failing fast in the heat
Anywhere you go the topic of conversation is the heat and the drought, at least it was, until someone apparently tried to shoot the former president. It was all I overheard anyone talking about during the Hampshire County Farm Crawl Saturday. I stopped by the Corn Festival in Springfield about two hours into it later that day and, I assume because of the extreme heat, there was nary a soul on the grounds outside of a couple vendors, and the guys preparing the food.

Trojans go 2-3 in final 7-on-7 tournament
SUNRISE SUMMIT — As the calendar makes the turn from June to July, the Trojans brought in some competition from around the region to hone their skills just one last time before the regular season finally rolls around. After taking home the top spot in a previous 7-on-7 hosted by Keyser just a few weeks ago, Rannells Field was home to Hampshire and eight other teams who took part in Saturday’s 7-on-7 and Big Man competition on July 13. Teams that made the trip included some who will be facing off against the Trojans when the season officially kicks off on August 30. Competitors from over the weekend included Musselman, Spring Mills, Berkeley Springs, James Wood, Petersburg, Keyser, Frankfort and Jefferson.
