SHELDON, Ill. (WTVO) — An Indiana deputy was critically injured Sunday during a gunfight with an armed Illinois man in a pursuit that crossed from Illinois into Indiana and back.

According to the Illinois State Police, around 8:45 p.m., troopers were called to assist officers from the Iroquois County Sheriff’s Department who were engaged in a pursuit with an armed man, 37-year-old Andrew Roselius, of Clifton.

Initial intelligence said Roselius had a hostage in his vehicle.

The pursuit went into Indiana, where the Newton County Sheriff’s Department engaged, and then came back into Illinois.

Roselius crashed in the town of Sheldon where he got out of the car and exchanged gunfire with police, authorities said.

During the gun battle, Roselius and a Newton County deputy were shot.

Roseilus was pronounced dead at the scene.

The deputy was taken to a regional hospital and remains in critical condition, police said.

No hostage was located in the vehicle.

The incident is under investigation by the Illinois State Police.
