NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After months of correspondence between KOLR 10 Investigates and the Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) following the disappearance and death of Springfield-native Riley Strain, the oversight agency found no evidence that bars over-served the Mizzou student the night he vanished.

Strain went missing from Nashville during a Mizzou fraternity trip on March 8 and his body was found in the nearby Cumberland River on March 22.

A toxicology report recently revealed Strain’s blood alcohol level was .228 and he also had Delta 9 in his system.

The Tennessee governmental body said it’s the responsibility of licensed businesses to avoid serving alcohol to visibly intoxicated customers.

According to the commission, when it receives information suggesting a death may be related to a violation at one of our licensed establishments, TABC routinely opens an investigation.

The report indicates the TABC looked into evidence at Luke’s 32 Bridge, Miranda Lambert’s Casa Rosa, Friends in Low Places Bar & Honky-Tonk, and Kid Rock’s Big Honky Tonk.

The investigation revealed Strain consumed at least seven or eight drinks between the four bars before slurring his speech, switching to water, and getting kicked out of Luke’s 32 Bridge.

“TABC agents conducted a comprehensive investigation, following every available evidentiary lead. They interviewed numerous individuals, reviewed purchase records, and scrutinized extensive video footage provided by businesses from that evening.

While the circumstances of Mr. Strain’s death are tragic, the TABC investigation into whether he was served alcohol while visibly intoxicated on the night of March 8, 2024, did not result in any concrete evidence in the form of eyewitness testimony or video proof of a violation.

Evidence including toxicology reports demonstrate that Mr. Strain became intoxicated over the course of the evening, but there is no clear evidence that he was served an alcoholic beverage while visibly intoxicated at a licensed premises.”

The report indicates Strain remained stable on his feet with no visible signs of overserving. In addition, video captured by alcohol commissioners showed Strain paying for his beverages and food via his debit card in stable condition along with returning his debit card back into his wallet.

Although Strain’s fraternity brothers have not been available for comment throughout our ongoing coverage, the TABC’s report shows at least three Mizzou Delta Chi members helped provide information to investigators including the Delta Chi Mizzou Chapter President.

The TABC went on to say it extends heartfelt condolences to Mr. Strain’s family during this difficult time.
