A 14-year-old girl attending a baseball game in Lowell, Indiana, was unexpectedly attacked and stabbed, with local authorities later identifying the assailant as a previously deported illegal immigrant. The incident occurred on Saturday while the girl was watching her brother’s game. The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Dimas Gabriel Yanez, allegedly approached the girl and stabbed her in the hand then tried to attack her mother who tried to intervene, before fleeing the scene. The weapon is believed to have been a butcher style knife.

Following an extensive search, law enforcement apprehended Yanez on Sunday after a foot pursuit through a Lake County cornfield. Yanez, a Honduran national, was deported to Honduras in 2018 but is believed to have reentered the United States illegally. Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. indicated that Yanez may have been involved in organized criminal activity across the country since his return.

“It’s believed [Yanez] was in the process of cutting his hair to change his appearance just before he was arrested,” Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. said. “Investigators have learned Yanez had been deported to Honduras in 2018 and may have been engaged in criminal activity across the United States since returning to the country illegally.”

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has been notified of Yanez’s arrest, according to local authorities. Law enforcement also reported that Yanez allegedly attempted to attack the girl's mother when she intervened during the stabbing. The weapon used in the attack is believed to have been a butcher-style knife.

This incident in northwestern Indiana is part of a broader pattern of violent crimes allegedly committed by illegal immigrants. Earlier this year, a Venezuelan national was charged with the murder of Laken Riley in February, and a Salvadoran national accused of killing a Maryland mother of five last year was arrested in June. Additionally, two Venezuelan nationals were charged with the sexual assault and murder of 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray in June.

Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita has consistently voiced strong opposition to illegal immigration, particularly targeting jurisdictions with "sanctuary city" policies. In a statement issued in May, Rokita emphasized the importance of upholding U.S. laws and expressed support for immigrants who follow legal procedures to enter the country.

“We welcome want-to-be-patriots to the United States who will add value to our country and want to live their lives under the values this country was founded upon,” Rokita said. “The first way they can show that is by following our laws. Those who do not follow our laws by entering our country legally should not be allowed to stay,”

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has not yet commented on the situation.
