NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — A 37-year-old man was sentenced to serve eight to 10 years in state prison for trafficking cocaine while owning an illegal gun, Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn III announced Friday.

Johan Baez, of New Bedford, pleaded guilty to trafficking cocaine, carrying an illegal firearm-subsequent offense, possession of a high-capacity feeding device and ammunition and possession with intent to distribute marijuana, Quinn said.

Police reportedly searched Baez and his Purchase Street apartment in August 2021 and found a kilogram of cocaine, a high-capacity magazine with 12 rounds and $3,800.

A pound of marijuana, several THC vape pens, a gun and another magazine were all seized from Baez’s car, according to prosecutors.

Quinn said a substantial state prison sentence was warranted for Baez based on his criminal record.
