NEW ORLEANS ( WGNO ) — With the Fourth of July and Essence Festival upon us, the New Orleans Police Department is making safety preparations and encouraging the public to follow general safety tips.

Large crowds are expected in the city for the Essence Festival of Culture happening July 5 to July 7 with artists like Janet Jackson, SWV, Charlie Wilson, Usher, Victoria Monet and more in town. This has prompted NOPD to increase its presence throughout the city.

Ahead of July 4, NOPD officers rolled out general safety tips:

    • Attend official, permitted fireworks shows: Unsanctioned use of fireworks is illegal in Orleans Parish
    • Do not fire weapons: Call 911 if you see or hear gunfire
    • Be aware of your surroundings
    • Drink responsibly and stay hydrated
    • Keep your phone charged and have a plan to stay in touch with your group
    • Secure your belongings

NOPD officials said they will maintain an increased presence with the help of Louisiana State Police troopers for enhanced security. Those within the city will notice the NOPD DWI Unit, enhanced patrols, road closures and parking restrictions.

The enhanced security comes as Louisiana law will allow all eligible individuals to carry a concealed firearm without a permit in the state except for in New Orleans starting Thursday, July 4.

Law enforcement officials ask that the public be responsible when operating a weapon during the holiday week.
