Potential Saints free agent signing removes himself from that conversation

The New Orleans Saints have added plenty of depth talent during this offseason. Safety remains a position with a bit of uncertainty.

Tyrann Mathieu is one of the best veteran players in the secondary throughout the NFL. Jordan Howden showed legitimate upside next to him. He was a day three selection, but he outplayed Marcus Maye in 2023.

Could they address the position any more before the preseason? It is possible, and they have the cap space for it.

Veteran safety Tashaun Gipson suspended six games

With the suspension. it is hard to see a team signing on Gipson in any sort of reliable way. He will miss a third of the season, and it may take him time to get sorted in a scheme once he can begin playing in games.

Doubtful that Saints sign Gipson now

New Orleans should probably look elsewhere if they want immediate safety help.

It's not particularly likely that they go after a big fish like Justin Simmons, but you never know. He would make the most impact of any secondary defenders left in the free agency pool.
