New Orleans Saints should address their biggest roster need by signing recently released player

Offseason additions at this time of the year are mostly for depth. For the New Orleans Saints, they've added players like Marquez Callaway and Roderic Teamer recently. Now, another intriguing option just became available on the free agent market.

This one is unique, though. The recently released defender is still a young player, who can make a notable impact for the Saints in 2024.

Saints should sign safety Caden Stearns

Stearns was released by the Denver Broncos on Monday morning. He was a productive player for Denver, but he did miss notable time in his first three pro seasons with injuries.

He's played in just six games over the past two years with Denver. His rookie year was his most active, with fifteen games played and two starts.

Why should New Orleans have interest?

They need safety depth . Jordan Howden and Tyrann Mathieu are their starters at the position. Past them, the depth is bumpy - at best.

Johnathan Abram has made flash plays, but he has also been deceptive to major mistakes at the pro level. Roderic Teamer was a nice offseason addition, but much of his value is on special teams. Will Harris is expected to be a backup in the slot for Alontae Taylor.

For Stearns, adding him in a role where his snaps are limited makes the most sense. That lowers the possibility of injury.

At the same time, it can allow Dennis Allen to use him to his strengths in those numbered snaps on defense. The Saints have not been afraid to have three safeties on the field at once under Allen, and if an injury occurs, they will be in a tough spot at the position as the depth chart currently sits.

We will see if the Saints show interest in Stearns. Regardless, he would add value immediately for the black and gold if they added him to the roster.
