NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ – New Providence School District is planning to undertake a large project of renovating its baseball and softball fields. Athletic Director Vincent Carangelo attended the Thursday, June 27 Board of Education (BOE) meeting to explain the scope and funding for the project.
The varsity softball team currently plays games at the Allen W. Roberts School (AWR). Carangelo explained that the district wants to bring the varsity softball team to the high school. The high school field currently accommodates both the varsity and JV teams on its field. The plan is to renovate the JV baseball field for the varsity softball team and move the JV baseball games to the AWR field. The configuration of the field to accommodate both varsity softball and baseball would allow simultaneous games played in a more stadium like setting.
The district has received a Local Recreation Improvement grant of $63,000 for the project, but it is not enough for the costly field renovation plan. Therefore, the district is opting to crowdsource another $50,000 through schoolfundr.org. Carangelo noted that it is rare that the district is looking for this kind of communitywide fundraising; however, the project, once completed will benefit the entire softball and baseball community in New Providence. The grant money must be utilized within a year and Carangelo said he hopes to begin the project in November.
With regard to other news the board discussed briefly the board and committee goals. The full list of goals will be on the July 25 meeting agenda. Once the board approves the goals, they will be posted on the district’s website.
The board also welcomed multiple new staff members and appointed personnel for summer positions.
Business Administer James Testa announced that the HVAC project has begun at the AWR. The work will soon begin at the other school buildings as well.
