NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ – Jonathan Keaney, Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Supervision, provided a presentation of the results of the 2024 New Jersey Graduation Proficiency Assessment (NJGPA) at the Thursday, June 27 Board of Education (BOE) meeting. The assessment consists both of English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics components and is administered to students in grade 11 as a tool of meeting the state graduation requirement. The junior class took the test in the spring of 2024.

A total of 93.3 % of New Providence students passed the test in ELA and 87.3 % passed the test in math. Keaney noted that the district is offering additional academic help to those students who did not meet the passing criteria. Last year the testing results in New Providence were slightly better. A total of 96.9 % of students of the 2024 graduating class passed the ELA and 90.70 the math tests. Keaney noted that the difference between the 2023 and 2024 test results reflects only five students.

Keaney explained that there are other means of demonstrating students’ graduation readiness. Those who did not pass the test may take the PSAT in October. The test will be free for students. They can also take the NJGPA test again in October. Additional options include taking SAT, ACT, or Accuplacer test at students’ own expense. If the student does meet the passing testing score in any of these assessments, he or she may begin the portfolio process with department heads beginning in January 2025.
