Aaron Rodgers risks angering New Yorkers by saying - 'We're the New Jersey Jets'

Aaron Rodgers has provided his two cents on the longtime debate surrounding the New York Jets - and residents of the Big Apple will likely not be pleased.

While making an appearance on Monday’s edition of the “Pardon My Take” podcast, Rodgers argued that the Jets belonged to New Jersey, not New York. Gang Green plays its home games at Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford, and has its training facility located in Florham Park.

“Nobody [on the team] lives in New York,” said Rodgers, who purchased a $9.5 million mansion in Cedar Grove, New Jersey last August. “If you are a Giant you can, but I don’t know why you would just because of the traffic into the tunnel.

“I joke about, I know the stadium used to be on Long Island, but we are the New Jersey Jets. So are the Giants .”

The Jets - formerly known as the Titans upon their founding in 1959 - first played at the Polo Grounds in upper Manhattan, sharing the decrepit stadium with the football and baseball Giants. The franchise eventually adopted its current name in 1963 after announcing a move to Shea Stadium in Queens, which is located near LaGuardia Airport. Up until 2008, its training facility was located at Hofstra University on Long Island.

Angry Jets fans quickly took to social media to push back at Rodgers’ argument, asserting that the team’s New York title must stick. “It never ceases to amaze me how difficult this is for people to grasp: The metropolitan area is more important than the State. It’s the New York City metropolitan area,” one X user wrote, with another adding: “New York sounds a lot better than New Jersey that’s just reality.”

Regardless, Rodgers fully embraced New York City after being traded from the Green Bay Packers to the Jets last year, with “Pardon My Take” co-host Big Cat going so far as to dub him “Mr. New York.” The 40-year-old routinely made the commute into the city to watch Rangers and Knicks playoff games, as well as plays and musicals on Broadway over the 2023 offseason.

Unfortunately for Rodgers and the Jets, his first season in New York came to a screeching halt just moments after it began. The four-time MVP attempted one snap and played four snaps in Week 1 against the Buffalo Bills before suffering a torn Achilles that would sideline him for the rest of the year.

"I had such a great time," Rodgers said of the buildup to the 2023 season. "That's why it was so heartbreaking to play four ------- plays."

Now entering his 20th season in the NFL , Rodgers conceded that he was unsure how much longer he’ll play football. “I don’t know. I’m not sure,” he said.

“This one for sure. I’d like to do - I wanted to do two good ones and get a chance to retire a Jet. You know, win two Super Bowls.”
