Newburyport Department of Public Services Water Treatment Plant Superintendent Thomas Cusick has paid a $13,000 civil penalty for violating the conflict of interest law by accepting free ski trips from a water meter manufacturer and its distributor. HAMPTON — The Gozzos have been getting more and more questions from curious customers about when their longtime North Beach smoothie shop will finally reopen. The Secret Spot’s new location at 560 High St. has been under lease since last fall and is set to open in time for the Fourth of July. The Gozzos have been working for six months to flip the former convenience store and realty office into a cafe serving smoothies, sandwiches, and the fruit for which they’re best known − açaí.

GLOUCESTER - The greasy pole competition kicks off Friday at St. Peter's Fiesta in Gloucester.Participants scamper across a greased 45-foot telephone pole that juts out over the ocean, trying to grab a flag at the end."It is not uncommon for these daring individuals to come away with scrapes, bruises or even broken ribs," organizers say.Last year's champion, Colin Sweet, said it was a "dream come true" to conquer the pole. The board of selectmen voted unanimously to approve new signs for the Kids Kingdom playground, to be purchased for no more than $7,000. Kids Kingdom, which is located at Eiras Park, was first created in 1997 by a group of Rowley mothers, spearheaded by Stephanie Jenkins. It is the town’s only public playground.

In this edition of the Mayor’s Corner, Mayor Reardon is on location at the Warren O. Page Fire Headquarters. Happy 249th Birthday, America! City Hall, the Senior/Community Center and the Newburyport Public Library will be closed on Thursday, July 4th and Friday, July 5th. The Yard Waste facility will be open on Friday, July 5th. The library will re-open on Saturday, July 6th. Mayor Reardon thanks all who attended the ribbon-cutting at Market Landing Park on Monday, June 17th. After almost 40 years in the making, it was a momentous celebration! Mayor Reardon attended several awards events and celebrations to mark the end of the school year. He would like to congratulate the Newburyport High School Girls’ Lacrosse team for making it to the State Finals. He would also like to acknowledge the recipients of this year’s Molin Awards: Maggie Flaherty, Boyd Hancock and Erin Hobbs! On Tuesday night, the FY’25 budget passed 6-5. There were no cuts recommended. The Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) failed 5-5-1 (recusal). The NFD has been very busy lately. We have a very exciting announcement about a new community facing software program called Community Connect which allows residents to add more information about their homes in the event of an emergency. You can add info on pets, number of residents, and special needs so that the Fire Department has it in advance. This information is securely stored and only used in case of an emergency.
