Ghost tales for around the campfire
I wonder if anyone still tells ghost stories around the campfire? This used to be one of the rites of summertime; like toasting marshmallows and sleeping under the stars when it grew too hot and humid indoors. I remember as a kid how creepy things looked in the dark especially in the woods when trees and bushes seemed to take on weird shapes and the only sounds were the constant buzzing of strange insects, and the hooting of owls. Wiscasset and Woolwich being deep-rooted New England towns have their share of ghost stories. Toss a log on the fire and listen while I tell you two of my favorites.

John Vander: ‘Postcards From Sicily’
New works on paper by John Vander at Gold/Smith Gallery July 29 to Sept. 18. Said Vander, “This is a visual remembrance of a short trip to the island of Sicily this year in January. The classical and baroque share a loving cup of the local wine. Everything was very different from Tuscany. The sky was a deeper clearer blue, the sea a transparent turquoise and all the colors seemed to be electrified. Arriving at night, the half moon rising over the sea, heading to Mount Etna from Catania Airport, with its curve parallel to the sea was a profound and magical preface of things to come. I returned to Tuscany and began painting this new and extremely colorful experience.
