ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — In an effort to combat the rising cost of living, Jewish Home, a local retirement community, is opening what it calls an Employee Grocery Store.

Jewish Home officials say the increasing cost of gas, utilities, and rent over the years has led to food insecurity for many, and they want to help.

The grocery store will be open at least twice per month and stocked with staples, fresh produce, frozen goods, and more. Eligible hourly employees will be able to fill two large bags of food essentials at no cost.

“It’s honestly wonderful,” Morgan Porach from Jewish Home said. “Not everyone has the time after work to go to the grocery store and spend massive amounts of money on it because inflation has gone up and prices have gone up, and it’s really wonderful that we have access to this store and it’s free to use.”

Officials with Jewish Home said the idea was inspired by colleges with similar programs for their students.
