Former Rush Henrietta track star qualifies for Olympics
ROCHESTER, NY (WHEC) – ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester native Lanae-Tava Thomas has qualified for the Jamaican track team at the upcoming 2024 Summer Olympics. Thomas finished 2nd in the women’s 200 meter run with a time of 22.34 seconds at trials on Sunday. A Section V Hall of Famer, Thomas holds five Section records and one state record.

Syracuse women’s lacrosse picks up transfer from Rochester area
Syracuse, N.Y. —The Syracuse University women’s lacrosse team has picked up a transfer from the Rochester area. Ava Peers of Fairport, N.Y., who spent her freshman season at the University of Louisville as a midfielder, will transfer to Syracuse for the 2025 season. Peers’ high school coach, Mara Karpp, confirmed the transfer to syracuse.com.

Red Wings rally to win series finale
Rochester, NY — The Rochester Red Wings (5-1, 43-36) have made comebacks a habit as of late and they did it again as they raced back to defeat the Indianapolis Indians (1-5, 34-45), 12-8. ROCHESTER, N.Y. – After a day full of rain, the skies cleared up in time for the Rochester Red Wings to play the Indianapolis Indians on Saturday night. The Red Wings perhaps wished it hadn’t, however, as they fell for the first time in the second half, 13-4, as Indianapolis hitters battered Wings pitching to the tune of 13 hits, including six in a six-run third and three in a five-run fourth spurred by a Malcolm Nunez grand slam.

Primetime 585 hosts annual Coach Iglesia Free Basketball Camp
Primetime 585, in partnership with News 8, held its 19th annual Coach Iglesia Free Basketball Camp in Rochester, N.Y., on Sunday. The camp offered 175 athletes from various Section V schools the chance to train, compete, and learn together. Besides basketball training, participants attended life skills workshops led by guest speakers, covering topics such as mental health. Co-Director and coach Brianne Moxley highlighted the camp’s value in allowing athletes to compete against unfamiliar peers, enhancing their skills and personal growth. The camp sessions will continue through July 3, featuring playoffs with appearances by WNBA and NBA notables.
Rochester Alternative Baseball hosts second annual series
Rochester Alternative Baseball (RAB) hosted its second annual Inclusion Series, Friday night at Webster Thomas. RAB is a local charity that provides residents, who live with neurodivergent conditions and other physical and mental disabilities, the chance to play the game of baseball along with members of the community. The series looks to promote inclusion through the game of baseball.

FERRIS GOODRIDGE POST 330 (1-8) 1. Paul Byrne sparked a two-out rally as Rayson Miller scored six in the fifth to pull away from a one-run game. Leading 2-1, Byrne drove in Nate Weber and Tyler Brown with his second of two hits in the game. Byrne scored on a Max Blaustein base hit as Rayson Miller batters strung together four straight base raps with Will Countryman and Jack Edelestein joining the parade. Countryman doubled and brought home Byrne with the go-ahead run in the fourth. Weber struck out six and allowed one run on four hits and a a walk over five innings to pick up the win. Countryman fanned one and walked one over two scoreless frames of relief. Weber was 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. Countryman finished 2-for-3 while Blaustein was 2-2 with an RBI. Edelestein had two RBI in the win. Collin Bates singled and scored the lone Ferris Goodridge run. Braxton Mann was 1-3 with an RBI. Gavin Zimmer and Liam Watson had a hit apiece.
RDGA to hold Hall of Fame induction ceremony
On the evening of Tuesday, July 16, the Rochester District Golf Association will proudly announce the third induction class of its Hall of Fame in what has become an annual highlight of “Championship week” – during the RDGA District Championship John H.
