(WIVT/WBGH) – A recent SUNY Broome graduate has been recognized as the most outstanding female scholar athlete in the SUNY system among those competing at the junior college level.

Standout runner Aja Jackson was named the SUNY Overall Scholar-Athlete of the Year in the women’s NJCAA category.

Jackson ran both cross country and track during her two years at Broome. And this past school year, she received the semester honors as best scholar-athlete.

Jackson just got her associate’s degree in business administration.

“What helped me a lot was the flexibility of classes. I was able to take a lot of online classes, so it helped me have a chance to focus on athletics as well,” said Jackson.

Among Jackson’s numerous athletic accomplishments was being national champion in the 10K race at the 2024 NJCAA Division 3 Women’s Outdoor Track and Field National Championships.

Jackson says she plans to take a gap year before returning to her studies, during which time she’ll be doing a lot of running.
