Amy Schumer Opens Up About Trying Ozempic And Its Health Effects: ‘I Was So Skinny’

This article has been updated since its initial June 16, 2023 publish date to include more information.

The buzz in Hollywood has been all about Ozempic lately , a medication used to treat type 2 diabetes, as well as its sister drugs, semaglutide-based Wegovy and Mounjaro, which target obesity.

These prescription medications are nutrient-activated and hormone-based, affecting the brain and inducing feelings of satiety. They’re becoming a hit in Tinseltown as a go-to for shedding a few pounds or tackling weight issues that have been plaguing folks for a long time.

Like other celebrities critical of the drug, Amy Schumer originally tried it to lose weight, but had to stop because of the side effects: “I was one of those people that felt so sick,” the comedian , 43, recently confessed to Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live .

Amy Schumer Gets Candid About Her Weight Loss Transformation And Experience With Ozempic

Schumer, who has sometimes faced public comments about her weight, shared with What What Happens Live host Cohen, 56, that she did try Ozempic to lose weight, but reacted quite badly to it.

"Like a year ago, I tried it," the I Feel Pretty star revealed. "I was one of those people that felt so sick and couldn’t play with my son. I was so skinny and he’s throwing a ball at me and [I couldn’t]."

Schumer shared that this made her realize the medication simply wasn't working for her: "And you’re like, 'OK, this isn’t livable for me.' But I immediately invested [in it] because I knew everyone was going to try it."

And try it they did, according to the Life & Beth alum, who said that she spotted fellow celebs "lying" about taking Ozempic for its weight loss properties. "Everyone has been lying saying, 'Oh smaller portions.' Like shut the f— up," she joked. "You are on Ozempic or one of those things or you got work done. Just stop. Be real with the people. When I got lipo, I said I got lipo ."

The Trainwreck actress indeed discussed her liposuction procedure on Chelsea Handler 's podcast Dear Chelsea, telling the host: " I got liposuction . I never thought that I was going to do anything like that. Like when I would hear liposuction I was just like, that's so crazy to me, and I would say that I'm not ever going to do anything...Cut to turning 40 after having a C-section!"

Amy Schumer Also Discusses Her Endometriosis Treatments

That, paired with endometriosis and other surgeries, prompted Schumer to pull the trigger on getting the procedure done. "I got lipo and I'm feeling really good...I just wanted to say that, because if anybody sees me in pictures or anything and they're like, she looks thinner, and whatever: it's because I had a surgery. It's too hard, and I just want to be real about it."

By sharing her experience with Ozempic, many fans think Schumer is definitely being real about the pressures to both look and feel perfect when you're in the spotlight, and how widespread those pressures (and the attempts to alleviate them) really are.
