Washington, DC - Before writing about the findings on the Uvalde School Massacre by the US Department of Justice (DOJ), questions arise about the necessity of the investigation. How many in law enforcement were already aware of these findings? Did we truly need a DOJ investigation to unveil what many suspected about Uvalde? And, perhaps most critically, what was the cost incurred by the DOJ to confirm what some argue was already common knowledge? In your opinion did the findings reveal anything new?

In a recent revelation, the DOJ released an extensive report on the 2022 mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. The tragic incident on May 24, 2022, resulted in the loss of 19 students and two teachers, making it one of the deadliest school shootings in the nation.

The 575-page Critical Incident Review, crafted from over 14,100 documents and 260 interviews, exposes the stark details of the law enforcement response during the tragic event. Accounts from terrified 9- and 10-year-old children, trapped with the gunman at Robb Elementary, vividly illustrate the unimaginable horror that unfolded during the initial 37 minutes of the incident.

    Key Findings from the Report:

Failure to Recognize Active Shooter Situation:

Despite a swift response from law enforcement officers, the report uncovers a critical failure in recognizing the incident as an active shooter scenario. Responding officers, upon reaching the affected classrooms, hesitated instead of immediately advancing, resulting in a significant delay in neutralizing the threat.

    Lack of Courageous Action:

Leadership failures within key figures, including the school Police Chief, acting Uvalde Police Chief, and Uvalde County Sheriff, were identified. The decision by the on-scene commander to prioritize evacuations over an immediate breach and entry contradicted established active shooter response principles, prolonging the exposure of children and teachers to danger.

    Failure to Communicate with Families:

The initial narrative of heroic first responders, dismissed as misinformation in the DOJ report, dealt a severe blow to public confidence in local and state law enforcement. Families encountered misleading information at reunification sites and hospitals, facing challenges in locating their loved ones and receiving incomplete or inaccurate details.

While Attorney General Merrick Garland expressed profound disappointment, labeling the law enforcement response a failure, President Joe Biden responded by emphasizing the multiple points of failure outlined in the report. He called on Congress to enact "commonsense" gun laws in light of the findings.

The DOJ report builds upon earlier findings from a state legislature committee, emphasizing deficiencies in law enforcement's preparation and response. The toll of misinformation on the community's mental health and recovery is underscored, prompting an independent review for potential criminal charges by the Uvalde County District Attorney. The community expresses gratitude for the ongoing pursuit of truth and accountability in the aftermath of this tragic event.
