With ten number one hits on Country radio, Lady A has long been a force to be reckoned with in the genre, however, it isn’t always about Country for the award-winning trio.

Fans might be surprised to learn Lady A has a Tony nomination under their belt from 2018, and even more surprised to know it’s all thanks to a cartoon who lives in a pineapple under the sea.

“Not many people know this but we actually have a Tony,” Charles Kelley said before group mate Hillary Scott chimed in clarifying, “Nomination.”

“Oh, we didn’t win?” Charles laughed. “I’ve been telling people we won. Well, we had a Tony nomination for — we wrote this song [‘Chop to the Top’] for the Spongebob musical... I thought we won it and one of y’all had the award,” he told his bandmates. “Alright, well, I gotta take that off my bio.”

While Charles processes the loss (six years after the nomination), the band says they’d be open to more Broadway-type musical appearances or even better, a movie or television score.

“If we ever got to tunnel in and devote our time to writing for a film or TV, show, a series, something to where we can all just get our hands in that… that would be awesome,” Hillary said.

“Any genre,” Charles said. “We could do any genre — any producer out there listening, you name it” he laughed, clearly stating the group’s eagerness to snag an opportunity in TV/film.

As they wait for the right opportunity to come along, the trio is currently hard at work on their next album which will feature their current single, “Love You Back.”

“This song, when I heard it, I felt like it had been written for us,” Charles explained of the single penned by Emily Wiseband , James McNair and Lindsay Rimes . “I just had this gut feeling that it was special… I sent it to the guys [Hillary and Dave] and they were like, ‘Wow, this is amazing.’”
