Richmond, Va. (Newsradiowrva.com) - A new scam is targeting drivers who use toll roads, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The scam is believed to be moving from state to state.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has issued a statement urging Virginians to be cautious. VDOT says the FBI has received over 2,000 complaints about “smishing” texts representing toll collection service since early March.

The texts claim the recipient owes money for unpaid tolls. The FBI says the language scammers use in these messages usually doesn’t vary and can appear as follows:

“(State Toll Service Name): We’ve noticed an outstanding toll amount of $12.51 on your record. To avoid a late fee of $50.00, visit (website address) to settle your balance.” Scammers sometimes claim to be from “E-Z Pass,” but officials say that’s not always the case.

If you receive one of these texts, VDOT recommends doing the following:

    • Filing a complaint with the IC3 , making sure to include the phone number from where the text originated and the website listed within the text.
    • Checking your account using the toll service's legitimate website.
    • Contacting the toll service's customer service phone number.
    • Deleting any smishing texts received.

If you clicked any link or provided your information, take efforts to secure your personal information and financial accounts. Dispute any unfamiliar charges.
