Sheriff's Office to auction surplus items

The board of commissioners gave their approval Monday to allow the Surry County Sheriff’s Office to dispose of surplus assets via an auction.

As is usually the case with such auctions, Mount Airy’s Rogers Realty & Auction Co. Inc., will oversee listing the items and conduct the sale.

Major Scott Hudson clarified that this is not an auction of property seized during investigations or that has been sitting in an evidence locker for ages.

“This is equipment that the sheriff’s office received from military surplus over the many years,” Hudson said.

“We get some equipment from LESS (Law Enforcement Support Services), which is an asset program through the military. After a time period, the equipment then belongs to the agency and they are allowed to sell it, or trade the equipment,” he explained.

The list of 20 items that Rogers will be handling for the sheriff’s auction shows off a wide variety of items, some of which have significant years on them. Included in the auction will be a trio of Kawasaki dirt bikes and six generators, some mounted on trailers, ranging from 3 kilowatts to 10 kilowatts.

Vehicles aplenty include a 1975 Kaiser truck, 1968 AMG truck, 1985 Chevy Truck Dually, 1984 2.5 ton AM General Corp. truck, and a 1953 Frehauf Cargo Trailer. The auction will also include a 2000 Boston Whaler Boat and trailer, an Avon 15 passenger boat featuring dual Johnson 70 horsepower motors, a Zodiac 10 passenger boat with a Mercury 20 horsepower motor, and a StarCraft Green Boat with trailer.

These items will be available for view on the Rogers Realty & Auction Co. Inc., website closer to the time of the sale, the date of which has yet to be determined.
