Local officials and business and civic leaders are expected to join developers Tuesday for a grand opening celebration at the new 338-unit Avalon Amityville rental complex.

The $120 million transit-oriented development from Arlington, Va.-based AvalonBay Communities was constructed the 7.7-acre site formerly occupied by Brunswick Hospital on Broadway at Louden Avenue. The hospital, which had operated for over a century, closed in 2005 and was mostly demolished in 2012.

The Village of Amityville approved a change of zone for the property in Nov. 2019 and construction on the project began two years later in Oct. 2021. The development is located just two blocks from the Amityville Long Island Rail Road station.

Avalon Amityville, which has 317 apartments and 21 townhouses, brings a mix of studios, one-bedroom and two-bedroom units. Monthly rents range from $2,113 to $3,395. Amenities include a fitness center, outdoor pool, outdoor lounge with grills, a pet spa and onsite parking. The townhomes featuretwo-car garages.

The Avalon project is the largest so far in Amityville’s ongoing downtown revitalization effort. The village was awarded the state’s $10 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative grant in 2021 which has funded streetscape and pedestrian improvements, revitalizing the area around its LIRR station, storefront rehab, assisting the development of a mixed-use building, renovations of existing buildings and helping the creation of new downtown businesses.

AvalonBay had proposed building a second project with 168 apartments on a lot across the street that was used as a hospital parking lot. But the plan was scrapped last year after some community opposition.

In Nov. 2020, a $26 million transit-oriented apartment complex opened in the village on a 2.4-acre site at 124 Greene Ave. Called Village By The Bay, the project from LandTek Group and Zucaro Construction, brought 115 rental apartments, with a mix of 38 studios, 65 one-bedroom and 12 two-bedroom apartments.
