Patrol: Summersville man charged with drug offense

A Summersville man faces a drug charge following his arrest May 17, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said.

Jeremy L. Shelton, 37, is charged with possession of a controlled substance, a class D felony.

At 12:34 p.m., the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department and K9 Zeus were dispatched to assist a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper by Walmart in Ava, where a semi-truck was pulled over.

The trooper requested a K9 unit due do indicators of narcotics. Upon arrival, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department corporal interviewed Shelton, who was giving off indicators of being under the influence, according to a report. Shelton advised the officers that he took Hydrocodone an hour before being pulled over, according to a report.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper asked for consent to search the truck, which Shelton refused. K9 Zeus, who is trained to detect drug odor, was released to do a search. He indicated controlled substances being near the front tire on the driver’s side. When advised that they would do a full vehicle search of the truck, Shelton got aggravated and told them they would not, to which the corporal told him based on the dog’s alert they were allowed, according to a report.

Found in the vehicle were a set of digital scales, a crystalline substance that field tested positive for methamphetamine and a broken glass pipe which also field-tested positive for methamphetamine.

Shelton was arrested for possession of methamphetamine and a warrant for his arrest was issued with a bond of $2,500 cash. He is required to have supervision twice weekly and is not allowed to have illegal drugs or any mood-altering substances. Shelton has since posted bail.
