The Volunteer of the Week this week is Aisha Williams. Williams was born and raised in Vicksburg. She is the daughter of Alfred and Ida Williams. She currently resides in Starkville, where she attends Mississippi State University. When she is not at college, she comes home to attend church, spend time with her family and continue giving back to the Vicksburg community.

How did your volunteering for Dana Road Elementary (DRE) begin?

My volunteering at Dana Road Elementary began my freshman year at Vicksburg High School. I was informed that I needed at least 100 community service hours to receive the Mississippi Tech Scholars award for my senior year.

How long have you been volunteering with Dana Road Elementary?

I have been officially volunteering with DRE for about five years, but I have always been at the school helping my mom, an assistant teacher.

What is your favorite memory while volunteering for Dana Road Elementary?

My favorite memory is seeing students’ faces light up when I return to DRE, since they do not see me as often due to being in college. However, I am just grateful to be able to go back to one of my alma maters and assist wherever I can.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering?

I would tell them to have a heart of just paying It forward. In many cases, individuals may not be able to pay you in return for all that you do for them and that is alright. As long as you are doing it from the heart, then that is all that should matter.

What are some of your tasks while volunteering at Dana Road Elementary?

A lot of the tasks that I do at Dana Road surround helping the faculty and staff. I help decorate the school and assist with events such as field day, parties, student awards and other tasks that the staff may need help doing.

What have you learned from volunteering?

I have learned that people are more than thankful when they have volunteers. Furthermore, getting to see the joy I bring to people of all ages lets me know that I am making a positive impact wherever I go.

How can someone who might be interested in volunteering with Dana Road Elementary get involved?

I would advise that they get in touch with the administration such as the principals. Dana Road is cautious with who they allow in their building for the safety of their staff and students. So getting in touch with the administration would be a great start.
