The incident occurred in the city of Dnipro , where the police caught the 19-year-old mother in possession of several bundles of cash.

Ukrainian National News reported that the teen is currently in pre-trial detention and faces human trafficking charges under Article 149(3) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

If convicted, she faces up to 15 years in prison. The court has decided to consider the possibility of her bail upon payment of one million Ukrainian hryvnia (a little under $25,000).

Dnipro police shared a statement about the arrest on Facebook , saying: "A resident of Dnipro "sold" her son for a million hryvnias. The perpetrator was detained while transferring funds."

"The court chose a preventive measure for the 19-year-old woman in the form of detention with the possibility of bail in the amount of over one million hryvnias. We will remind that yesterday the investigators of the Dnipropetrovsk region handed the suspect a notice of suspicion under Part 3 of Art. 149 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (human trafficking)."

The Ukrainian national broadcaster Suspilne reported, via Mirror , that the young woman wanted to sell the two-year-old because "she did not want to take care of her son."

According to Mirror , the teenage mother tried to sell the child to an "acquaintance" for around $20,664 and wanted to use the money to open a business. She had already received the money from the "transaction" when she was arrested .

Photos of the arrest shared by the Dnipro Prosecution Office showed an open handbag, presumably belonging to the mother, with several bundles of banknotes inside. Another showed a female officer laying the cash outside and counting it.

"The crime was documented by the police departments of the Migration Police and the Investigative Department of the National Police in the Dnipro region in cooperation with the Department of Criminal Analysis."

The identities of the buyer and the 19-year-old mother have not been revealed by the authorities.
