American Association of University Women names 2024 scholarship recipients

The Wooster Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) announced its annual scholarship awards to three Wayne County women who have returned to school to pursue further education.

This year’s recipients are Asharia Irby and Joanna Swartzentruber from Wooster and Amanda Myers from Orrville.

Irby is pursuing the licensed practical nurse program at the Wayne County Career Center and works as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Danbury Wooster.

Swartzentruber, a second-time recipient of an AAUW scholarship, will finish her final semester this fall at the University of Akron toward an undergraduate degree in psychology. She works as an administrator at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Wayne County.

Myers is pursuing a BSN degree at the University of Akron, Wayne College, after working for 10 years as a nursingassistant, most recently at West View Healthy Living in Wooster.

Founded in 1881, the American Association of University Women (AAUW), a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization, advocates for fair pay and equal opportunities for women and girls. As part of this effort, the Wooster Branch provides scholarships to women whose post-secondary education has been interrupted.

To raise money for the scholarships, an annual book sale is held in partnership with the Kiwanis Club of Wooster. This year’s sale is scheduled for Sept. 24-28 at the Wayne County Fairgrounds, with free admission except for the $10 “preview night” on Tuesday, Sept. 24.
