    Summer Schedule of events for Craft Memorial Library

    BLUEFIELD, WV (WVNS) — Craft Memorial Library will be starting its Summer Reading Program for the 2024 year.

    Bluefield, WV is looking to the future with the Bluefield Comprehensive Plan

    Adventure Begins at the Library will start June 24, 2024 and continue through August 1, 2024. Registration is required for these events and participants can register at the library or online.

    The following is the schedule of events:

    Story Hours:

    • The Intrepid Explorers Storytime will begin June 25, 2024 from 10:00 A.M. to 10:45 A.M. and will be for children who are aged five to 10. This event will only be held on Tuesdays.
    • Little Travelers Storytime will be for children aged two to five and begin on June 27, 2024 from 10:00 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. This event will only be held on Thursdays.

    Cooking Classes:

    Beginning June 27, 2024, children will make two recipes each week to take home during these classes. The classes will meet on Tuesdays only and are sponsored by Grant’s Supermarket.

    • Food Safari (ages six to 12): Tuesdays, 11:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M.
    • Food Adventurers (ages four to five): Tuesdays, 10:45 A.M. to 11:15 A.M.

    Reading Challenges:

    • Summer Reading Challenge: This event will begin June 24, 2024 and will be for ages two to 18. Participants are asked to read 20 minutes per day. Reading Logs can be picked up from the library. When a log is completed, participants can go to the library and get a new log. Participants can bring in their logs weekly to receive a small prize and those that participate regularly will get a free book at the end of the summer.
    • Adult Reading Challenge: This event is for adults 18 and up. Participants can pick up a reading log and join this challenge. If 20 hours are read, participants can enter a drawing for a prize basket. Reading Logs can be turned in through August 3, 2024.

    Book Clubs:

    • Tween Book Club will be for ages nine to 12. This club will meet Wednesday, June 26, 2024, July 10, 2024, and July 24, 2024 at 2:00 P.M. Members of the group will read a different title for each class, have a discussion, and participate in an activity. Books are supplied by the library.
    • Teen Book Club will meet every Monday at 1:00 P.M. starting June 24, 2024. Members of the group will read a different title each week, have a discussion, and participate in an activity. Books are supplied by the library.
    • Book Chat is a book club for adults. It will be held on the third Monday of the month from 5:30 P.M. to 6:30 P.M. This club is free and all books are provided by the library. It will start on June 17, 2024 and space is limited.

    Quilting:

    • Crafty Quilters: Learn to quilt on the second Saturday of the month at 10:00 A.M. A different project will be worked on each month.

    Special Programs:

    • Chess Club: This club meets on the first Saturday of the month. It will take place on Saturday, June 1, 2024, Saturday July 6, 2024, and Saturday, August 3, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. Any level is welcomed.
    • Girl Scouts Troop 10456 Meeting: The Troop will be meeting on Monday, June 3, 2024, Monday, July 1, 2024, Tuesday, June 18, 2024, and Tuesday, July 16, 2024 at 5:30 P.M. This event is for people who are interested in joining or want to see how a meeting is run. Register in person at a meeting or online at https://www.bdgsc.org using troop #10456. There are so many activities and subjects to explore. There is $15 registration fee. Scholarships are also available.
    • Juneteenth Program: This event will take place on Saturday, June 22, 2024 at 1:00 P.M. Speaker, artist, poet, and singer, Shannon Smith will be leading a special program called, “On the Edge of Excellence.”
    • Mini Adventure Art Show: This event is for children and teens. They can pick up a mini canvas and come up with an adventurous scene to display on it and return the canvas by 5:00 P.M. on July 5, 2024 to be judged in a contest for the best painting. Only one vote per person. Winners in each age category will be announced on July 24, 2024. Art will be displayed in the library from July 8, 2024 to July 20, 2024.
    • Lego Club: Kids and teens can express their creativity with thousands of Legos. This event will begin on Monday, June 24, 2024 at 3:30 P.M.
    • Around the World Kickoff Carnival: Kids ages two to 12 can play carnival games to win prizes. This event will be on Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at 3:30P.M. Refreshments will also be provided.
    • Messtival: Families and other participants can enjoy a day of making messes and getting messy. Dress accordingly. A towel and change of clothes is recommended. This event will be on Tuesday, July 9, 2024 at 3:30 P.M.
    • Garden Series: Herbal Alchemy: Crafting Tinctures for Wellness: This event will be on Wednesday, July 17, 2024 at 2:00 P.M. Learn about healing from herbs and make your own herbal tinctures. A $5 supply fee is included with registration and is due by July 13, 2024.
    • Adventures in Music: Music teacher, Troy Price will be leading this event. Participants can learn about the different families of instruments. This will be on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, Wednesday July 17, 2024, Wednesday, July 24, 2024, and Wednesday, July 31, 2024 at 4:00 P.M.
    • Gardening Series: Mushroom Magic: Growing Mushrooms at Home: Taking place on Wednesday, July 31, 2024 at 2:00 P.M., Participants can learn how to grow their own oyster mushrooms and leave with their own mushroom growing kit. A supply fee is still being decided to go along with registration.
    • Lunch and Lego: Preschool age to teen participants can go to the library for a pizza lunch and some Lego free play. This event is on Friday, July 19, 2024 at 12:00 P.M.
    • Adventures in Nature: This event will be on Thursday, July 25, 2024 at 2:00 P.M. Kids aged six to 12 can join Master Naturalists, Pam and Duane Blevins to learn about nature, and tools that can be used to explore the great outdoors.
    • Teen/Tween Summer Finale: This is the closer for the events at Craft Memorial Library, which will take place on Monday, July 29, 2024 at 1:00 P.M. Ages 9 to teen can go the library for games, pizza, and more.
