Washington State residents were recently surprised when a blue leopard frog was spotted by wildlife officials. The rare creature has iridescent coloring and hasn't been seen in the state for five years.

Wildlife technicians surveying northern leopard frogs in the Grant County area were pleasantly surprised when they discovered the iridescent blue leopard frog.

Their more common counterparts, the brown and green leopard frogs, are often seen. The blue frog has remained scarce since it was last seen in 2019.

Listed on the endangered species list in Washington State, the frog species hasn't been federally listed per the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services. The medium-sized frog can readily be identified by its rounded or oval dark spots sporting a lighter border with a cream or white underbelly.
