Now that summer is in full swing, it’s officially ice cream season. Nothing quite hits as hard as ice cream on a hot summer day, and it will always be a go-to snack for those who crave the tasty dairy treat. But before anyone rushes to the grocery store to grab a pint of their favorite ice cream this week, it might be worth it to check the latest recall list before diving head-first into ice cream bliss.

On June 24, 2024, Totally Cool, Inc. announced the recall of all ice cream and gelato products due to a potential health risk. According to the recall notice , the Owings Mills, Maryland born company identified multiple brands of ice cream products that may have been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Products from these brands were distributed nationwide to both retail locations and direct delivery options.

The brands that have been identified in the recall include: Friendly’s, Abiyln’s Frozen Bakery, Hershey’s Ice Cream, Yelloh!, Jeni’s Ice Cream Sandwiches, Cumberland Farms, The Frozen Farmer, Marco, ChipWhich, AMAFruits, Taharka, Dolcezza Gelato and LaSalle. Totally Cool, Inc. has ceased the production and distribution of the affected products, thanks to the FDA’s sampling which discovered the presence of Listeria monocytogenes. Consumers who may have one or more of the recalled products in their possession are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

For those who may be unaware, Listeria monocytogenes are organisms that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly folks and those with a weakened immune system. Healthy individuals who come in contact with Listeria monocytogenes can also experience short-term symptoms such as high fever, bad headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. In extreme cases, miscarriages and stillbirths are possible among pregnant women.
