LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Eaton County officials say its sheriff deputies will now carry something even stronger than Narcan to reverse drug overdoses.

According to Sheriff Thomas Reich deputies will carry and be allowed to administer Opvee nasal spray . Reich says Eaton County will be the second county in the state to carry Opvee.

“With the increase of synthetic opioids such as fentanyl, it can become more difficult to quickly reverse the effects of an overdose,” the Eaton County Office of the Sheriff wrote in a news release. “Opvee (nalmafene) is an opioid receptor blocker designed to effectively reverse the effects of powerful synthetic opioids such as fentanyl.”

The other department in Michigan using this nasal spray is Oakland County.

“Protection of life is our highest priority and we make an impact in reversing opioid overdoses when we arrive first at many scenes,” Eaton County Sheriff Reich said. “I want our deputies to have this emerging advancement as we respond to overdoses of more powerful drug mixtures.”
