Jim Harbaugh is known for being hard-nosed and being a winner. With the new Los Angeles Chargers coach gearing up for his first NFL season since 2014, expectations are high.

However, one NFL analyst has set the bar as high as possible without uttering the phrase “Super Bowl.”

Conor Orr of Sports Illustrated has predicted Harbaugh to narrowly beat out New Yrok Giants coach Brian Daboll to win the Coach of the Year award this coming season.

“Slightly edging out Brian Daboll’s work with the stunning second-place Giants, Harbaugh will be rewarded for capping a massive turnaround for the Los Angeles Chargers and ushering in a new era of toughness and grit… Harbaugh will go 1–1 against the Chiefs in his first year, with both games ending within a field goal.”

In addition to that, he predicted the Chiefs to lose to Harbaugh in one game this season. Chargers fans would love to see that come true, considering the Chiefs’ status as the two-time defending champs.

Jim Harbaugh faces Chargers’ daunting Herbert-era enigma

The Chargers have mostly been seen by fans as a franchise that succumbs below the sum of their parts. Despite placing Justin Herbert and Keenan Allen on the same roster for four consecutive seasons, the team never found a way to win a playoff game.

Herbert has managed to throw for more than 30 touchdowns twice in his four-year career. Allen, meanwhile, managed to earn at least 990 yards in three of his last four seasons. However, despite the impressive production on offense, the team failed to capitalize.

By comparison, Peyton Manning managed to win the Super Bowl while throwing for only nine touchdowns and 17 interceptions in 2015. Of course, asking for a Super Bowl in any player’s career is a tall request, but Herbert’s monumental regular season production has led to sluggish playoff results.

Adding Harbaugh to the mix and subtracting Allen (plus numerous other key weapons) leaves the new Chargers head coach in competition with fellow AFC West coaches Sean Payton, Andy Reid, and Antonio Pierce down some major offensive pieces.

Will Jim Harbaugh find a way to solve the franchise’s issue with fewer pieces?

The Chargers will kick of their regular season when they host the Las Vegas Raiders on Sept. 8.
