A new water quality report found high levels of bacteria containing human and animal feces in some East End waterways. The Blue Water Task Force regular tests at places like Wildwood Lake in Northampton and dozens of other locations. Researchers say many of those locations experiences bacteria levels that exceed the safe health standard for swimming. Experts say Long Island has outdated septic systems and cesspools that contribute negatively to the water quality. Volunteers sample the waters around the East End every week and results are posted
online . They test where people are likely to get into the water like the ocean, bays, beaches, creeks and ponds. The oceans and beaches typically test low. Experts advise people to stay out of the water 24-48 hours following heavy rain, wash off after going in the water with fresh water and wash your hands before eating while at the beach. The Surfrider Foundation says Suffolk County legislators recently approved a ballot referendum that would create a Suffolk County Water Quality Restoration Fund. It will be on the ballot in November.
