DES MOINES, IOWA — Central Iowa is on target to receive more severe weather to wrap up the last week of June. Friday morning rain and thunderstorms have stayed below severe limits and will exit to the east through mid-morning. Generally, between 0.25″-1″ of rain has fallen through the morning with some isolated higher amounts. This moisture and volatile remaining atmosphere will set the stage for the next round of storms later today.

A strong cold front is pushing into central Iowa late afternoon and evening and the atmosphere ahead of it could be primed with the addition of some clearing and heating building, adding to the instability. If we get decent period of clearing, sun and heat, this will increase the likelihood of severe storms late afternoon and evening as the front lifts across the state.

Indications are that the first of the storms will begin in northwest Iowa around 1 to 2 PM and move towards Fort Dodge and Mason City from 3 to 4 PM. Another cluster of cells will develop in western Iowa around 3 PM and be west of the Des Moines Metro by 5 PM, crossing the capital city through 7 PM.

All modes of severe threats are in play with main threats being damaging winds and hail.

However, a few isolated tornadoes are possible across the state with the highest likelihood of tornadoes occuring in southwest Iowa. Leftover outflow boundaries from the morning convection could help add a little extra spin needed to get storms going that could have enough rotation to produce tornadoes, especially across the southern portion of the state.
