    The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday struck down one of the common criminal charges leveled against participants in the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot.

    The 6-3 ruling authored by Chief Justice John Roberts held that the U.S. Department of Justice overreached in charging Jan. 6 defendants with the federal crime of obstruction of an official proceeding.

    The Court found that a federal law on obstruction requires the government to prove that a defendant “impaired the availability or integrity for use in an official proceeding” of records, documents or other things.

    In a concurring opinion, Justice Katanji Brown Jackson opined that Jan.
