Forestry Commission urges caution during the 4th of July celebrations

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — This past week, rain accumulation has been sporadic across the area, with some areas receiving pockets of heavy rain and others just a light sprinkle.
With the continued dry conditions, the Alabama Forestry Commission is urging the public to use caution during any 4th of July celebrations.
The dry fuels across the state will support the increased threat of fire spread this upcoming holiday, according to State Forester Rick Oates.
“With persisting dry conditions throughout Alabama, we’re issuing a fuels advisory for most counties,” Oates said. “Despite some areas receiving rain recently, the excessive heat will negate any beneficial rainfall.”
The Forestry Commission has responded to 76 wildfires, which burned approximately 1,500 acres, in the past ten days.
With plenty of dry fuel to support rapid fire spread, the Forestry Commission has some safety tips.
The biggest tip is to avoid shooting off fireworks near dry grass. If you are using a charcoal grill it is important not to dump the hot coals on the dry grass. Give the coal time to cool or soak it with water before dumping it.
If you plan to have a small campfire, make sure you properly put it out and never leave it alone.

Rapid Onset Drought Threat:
The latest drought update was released on Thursday, showing the majority of the area is now experiencing ‘Abnormally Dry’ conditions.
In the coming week, scattered showers and isolated storms are in the forecast for the area. This will limit the chance of widespread heavy rainfall. Those who see heavy rain will begin to see relief compared to others who will see the drought worsen.
The Climate Prediction Center has the majority of the Southeast forecast to see a rapid onset of drought from July 5 to the 11. The dry and hot conditions in the forecast will contribute to dry soil conditions.
Above is a look at the total rain we’ve seen since June 10.
Rain totals have been very isolated across North Alabama and Southern Middle Tennessee. The highest rain totals have been associated with tropical-like downpours.
Heading into the weekend, isolated showers and storms will be possible for the region. Stick with the Weather Authority for the latest!
