Yikes! ESPN is in hot water after a TikToker called them out for misogyny, claiming they sexualized her and a female friend while licking ice cream, thus allowing “f***ing creeps” to harass them both online.
A woman who goes by Annie J on TikTok is very upset with ESPN after she and a female friend attended the 2024 Men’s College World Series championship game, where ESPN’s cameras hyper-focused on the women as they quickly licked their fast-melting ice cream. The TikToker accused the sports network of showing misogynistic behavior and sexualizing her and her friend, thus allowing “f***ing creeps” online to harass them both.
On Monday (June 24), ESPN broadcasted the national college baseball championship game between Tennessee and Texas A&M. However, during the game, camera operators at ESPN zoomed in on Annie J and her friend eating ice cream, and “creeps” across social media caused the clip to go extremely viral, even comparing it to the also viral clip of Hailey Welch, aka the “ Hawk Tuah Girl ,” who’s become famous for re-enacting the sound of spitting onto a man’s genitalia during oral sex.
As if the zoom-in on the two women at the game wasn’t enough, the accused misogynistic ESPN broadcasters further sexualized the moment by commenting, “You gotta get it before it melts, it’s liquid,” and, “A night like tonight, you’re working fast.”
Calling out the misogyny at ESPN after being sexualized for licking ice cream and having “f***ing creeps” harass her, the TikToker fired off a video and said, “It was a 20-second segment of just us eating ice cream or licking our ice cream. 20 seconds dedicated to—with commentary—to just us eating our ice cream. We all knew what direction that video was gonna head in, and lo and behold the creeps of TikTok got a hold of it because we woke up getting compared to the ‘Hawk Tuah’ girl.”
The TikToker continued to call out all of the social media users and “creeps” with wives and kids leaving obscene comments, “It is so beyond evident that women are not welcome in the sports world. … But we just wanted to enjoy a baseball game, and it was 100 degrees, so God forbid we eat some ice cream.”
The woman added, “Then people sit back and wonder, ‘Hmm, why don’t women feel welcome in these environments?’ … Because what’s funnier than a woman licking an ice cream cone or eating a hot dog or something that can be overly sexualized? But ESPN can keep it vague enough and the ambiguity is what protects them when they just open the door for f***ing creeps like this to come in and do whatever they want with it.”
