Could Giants turn to this rival QB next year if Daniel Jones falters?

The New York Giants have made it pretty clear to quarterback Daniel Jones this offseason — produce or be gone.

With their attempts to land Jones’ successor (Drake Maye) in the 2024 NFL draft failing short, Big Blue has to focus on the future should the former first-rounder Jones not secure the starting job once and for all this season.

Dan Duggan of The Athletic believes the Giants may turn to Dallas Cowboys veteran Dak Prescott, who is scheduled to hit free agency next season and cannot be franchise-tagged by the Cowboys.

Prescott’s uninspiring playoff track record overshadows his excellence in eight seasons as the Cowboys’ quarterback. He has a 73-41 career record, including a 12-2 mark against the Giants. He has topped 4,000 yards and 30 touchdown passes three times each, including a league-leading 36 TD passes last season.

Prescott turns 31 in July. His age and production would make him the most attractive quarterback to hit free agency since … Tom Brady in 2020?

The price tag will reflect Prescott’s desirability. Could the Giants really pivot from Jones to a replacement who will cost $60 million per year? If they’re desperate to win in 2025, Prescott represents their best option.

The Giants may seek to disengage themselves from Jones after this season as they will have an affordable “out” option on the $160 million deal they signed him to last March.

It’s a double positive if they can land Prescott. He has owned the Giants since entering the league in 2016 with a 12-2 record against them and is 73-41 overall as a starter.

Maybe the Giants would start beating Dallas with Prescott on their side. Jones has logged in a miserable 1-7 record against the Cowboys, his only win coming with Prescott out of the lineup.

Jones is also coming off a torn ACL that cut his season in half last year but will be playing behind a vastly improved offensive line and is now surrounded by a cache of young stud receivers.

Prescott, meanwhile, is still only 31 — and besides his playoff failures — is still considered a top passer in this league. As Duggan notes, “he has topped 4,000 yards and 30 touchdown passes three times each, including a league-leading 36 TD passes last season.”

Sure, it would be a bizarre turn for both teams should Prescott defect to New Jersey, but it might help close the gap between the Giants and Cowboys that has only grown wider over the past decade.
