The Blue Hills Genealogical Society welcomes Don Peterson of Barron as the guest speaker at its July 8 meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the Barron Senior Center, 12 N. Third St. The public is invited to attend.

Peterson has been a war history buff from an early age. He toured the famed Higgins Museum, the National World War II Museum in New Orleans and took a commemorative tour of the Battle of the Bulge area in 2023.

The Battle of the Bulge lasted six weeks, beginning Dec. 16, 1944, and was known as one of the most decisive and dangerous battles of WWII. It took place in Belgium, Luxembourg and France, in the forests where the German Panzer divisions broke through the Allied lines.

Get more information on the society and how to join online at bhgsbc.org. Meetings are held monthly February through November.

Society members are also volunteering this summer to help families research their family history on Fridays in the town hall at the Pioneer Village Museum west of Cameron. It will also have a display and silent auction there during Heritage Days coming up July 13-14.

The society's certificate program is open to anyone who has a direct ancestor who lived in Barron County by 1871 for the Pioneer certificate or by 1924 for the Century Certificate. Applications can be found at bhgsbc.org or by contacting certificate chair Linda Adams at 715-205-2860.

Those with donations of genealogical items from the Barron County area should contact Gloria Dobberfuhl at 715-637-5579 or mgd5579@hotmail.com.

The society's Resource Library is available for research by contacting Rosella Amundson at 715-537-5760 for an appointment.
