CABARRUS COUNTY, N.C. ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — It has been almost six years to the day since Brian Manring lost his life along Old Salisbury-Concord Road in Cabarrus County, and construction is underway to prevent future tragedies.

In December, NCDOT announced that it would pump $1.1 million into the development of a roundabout at the intersection of Old Salisbury-Concord and Irish Potato Road.

The roundabout would force vehicles to slow down and eliminate the blind spots, which have proven deadly in the past.

In July 2018, Brian Manring died when he pulled out in front of an 18-wheeler from Irish Potato onto Old Salisbury-Concord.

Shortly after his death, Brian’s family started a petition to fight for a stop light to be added to the intersection.

“I just want everybody to know that my son was a wonderful child. He didn’t deserve this. I’m hoping that my fight prevents some other tragedy,” said Robert Manring.

NCDOT informed Queen City News that it reported 28 crashes between 2013 and 2018, of which 10 appeared to be the results of vehicles pulling out in front of other vehicles.

In December 2023, NCDOT announced it would spend money to add a roundabout to the area.

Zachary Garner, with NCDOT, explained that “to go from a traffic signal at an intersection to a roundabout . . . you’re conflict points go from 32 to where a roundabout has about 8.”

This means fewer chances of accidents.

On June 3rd, NCDOT announced it had shut down the intersection to begin the process of installing a roundabout.

The project will be wrapped up in the later part of July or early part of August.
