Man donates self-help books, study Bibles to Carter County Jail

An Elizabethton man donated several new positive books on Monday to the Carter County Jail.

Louis Greene delivered the books, which he purchased from the Barnes & Noble store in Johnson City, to Carter County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Barbara Scalf and Sgt. Will Vinson.

“A little bit of self-help goes a long way,” Greene said.

Greene donated study Bibles, self-help books by Dale Carnegie and Napolean Hill. He said his favorite was “Think and Grow Rich” by Hill, a Southwest Virginia author.

“I used to read self-help books during my earlier years,” Greene said.

He felt providing some of his favorite books to the jail would help those incarcerated.

In all, he donated 24 books to the jail. Vinson said the books will be shared with prisoners.

The jail has a plastic jail cart that is taken around the jail to provide books to the inmates. The inmates can then select books and return them.

“It goes to different parts of the jail every day,” said Vinson, who said he also sets aside the study Bibles for those who request them. He said he often gets such requests.

Vinson and Scalf, who serves as the assistant jail administrator, said the facility welcomes book donations.
